Frequently Asked Questions
General questions
A natural pool constructed according to the BioNova® principles differs from a conventional swimming pool first and foremost through the organic water purification process. The BioNova® system uses natural filter processes with plants and micro-organisms to clean the water, without employing any chemicals such as chlorine. This ensures soft, clear water that retains a natural balance. What is more, the BioNova® system is a sustainable solution that not only encourages biodiversity but is also seamlessly integrated in the environment. In comparison, a conventional swimming pool needs regular chemical maintenance, resulting in higher operating costs. The lifetime of the pool is maximised through professional planning and implementation. The BioNova® system therefore offers an environmentally friendly, cost-efficient, aesthetically appealing alternative to traditional swimming pools.
Your pond provides an important habitat for insects such as dragonflies and butterflies that help nature without doing any damage to your system.
Generally speaking, the temperature depends on the weather conditions. In a conventional swimming pond, the sun warms the shallow areas of water relatively quickly. These then pass on the heat to the deeper bathing water. However, it is also possible to heat up the water in BioNova® installations.
Thanks to the entirely natural process in your bathing oasis, you can confidently let children and even babies enjoy the high-quality water without any protection against water contact. Everyone will love diving without goggles and carefree splashing in the water.
If maintained correctly, a natural pool can have a lifetime of several decades. Our linings are particularly tough and stable and are carefully installed by specialists in order to ensure maximum durability. The pool lifetime is maximised thanks to the use of long-lasting materials such as PVC or FPO and professional installation by our BioNova partners. Regular maintenance naturally also plays an important role in preserving the pool's functionality and ecological balance in the long-term.
Building a swimming pond demands extensive knowledge in fields such as limnology and botany, as well as technical expertise and gardening know-how. BioNova® provides its partner companies with extensive training in order to prevent planning errors and ensure a fully-functioning, sustainable system. Anyone who wants to do some of the work themselves, whether for fun or in order to save costs, can do simple tasks such as excavating the basin under the guidance of a BioNova® expert. However, the planning, works supervision and specialist tasks should always be entrusted to professionals, because errors during construction can result in high costs and problems later on.
A swimming pond is not only a highlight during the summer months, but is also a real eye-catcher during the winter. Thanks to the natural vegetation and aesthetic design, it remains attractive all year round. In addition to its visual appeal, and depending on its size, a swimming pond can also be used for other purposes, for example for sporting activities like ice skating.
Based on our experience, you should plan for an area of at least 2 x 2 metres for your mini-swimming pond. This is because the primary purpose of a small swimming pond isn’t necessarily swimming but rather cooling off and relaxation. Comfortable seating that allows for reclining is highly recommended. Thanks to the BioNova® construction method, there are countless design possibilities for your mini-swimming pond. You can enhance your pool with a waterfall or add an eye-catching stone fountain. Additionally, if you’re looking for a more athletic experience, a counter-current system can easily be installed. Heating the water in your mini-pool is also an option. We’d be happy to advise you on the various design possibilities.
- Water heating (e.g. solar power installations, heat pumps, gas or electric heating)
- Lighting (e.g. underwater LED lights, garden lighting)
- Access routes such as steps or ladders made from various materials (natural stone, stainless steel, wood)
- Water features and showers (e.g. waterfalls, fountains, rain showers, outdoor showers)
- Slatted pool covers (automatic or manual covers)
- Jumping rocks or jumping towers (e.g. made from natural stone or stainless steel)
- Liana ropes and climbing walls (lianas for climbing made from rope or wood, climbing walls made from stone, stainless steel or wood)
- Splash and massage showers (for relaxation and wellness)
- Counter-current system (for swimming training)
- Pool play equipment (e.g. slides, splash systems, paddling pool)
Questions on maintenance
It is easy to look after a swimming pond because the BioNova® system makes use of organic cleaning processes. Nevertheless, regular cleaning is still necessary in order to ensure a clear view when in the water. Conventional tools such as a hand net, brush and leaf net are helpful. However, modern pond cleaning devices can also be useful.
As a BioNova® partner, we would be delighted to maintain and care for your swimming pond or natural pool for you. Just contact us if you need help during regular pond maintenance.
In addition to traditional cleaning tools such as hand nets, brushes and leaf nets, a wide range of modern pond cleaning equipment is now also available. Please ask your BioNova partner what tools and equipment are suitable for your project.
Cleaning robots are useful for preventing sediment from accumulating in the swimming area during the summer months. However, they are not a substitute for a thorough spring and autumn clean. There are special models for organically cleaned installations that are suitable for use in swimming ponds.
In spring, the installation is activated by your BioNova® partner, who also prepares it for the winter at the end of the year. In some cases, the installation can also be used all year round. This is something you should discuss with your BioNova® partner.
Algae are part of a swimming pond's natural ecosystem and help by supplying oxygen. Forward planning and regular maintenance prevent excessive algal growth and make sure that the water remains clear.
